On April 11th, Sky Deutschland journalist Florian Plettenburg explained that Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard ‘wants’ Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Matthias Ginter.

The defender’s current deal runs down at the end of this season and has announced his decision to leave the Bundesliga side as a free agent.

After Aston Villa’s links emerged, the 28-year-old was directly quizzed whether he would be open to making a switch to England in the upcoming window.

Although the centre-back refused to confirm or deny the possibility of joining the Premier League side, he did admit a decision on his future would be made soon.

According to Bild, the Germany international has decided to return to SC Freiburg in the summer.

Aston Villa’s interest to acquire the free agent’s services is highlighted again as Gerrard’s side were ‘in the running until very recently’.

However, the player has made a surprise decision to join Freiburg over the likes of the Villans, Inter Milan or another club.

Ginter earns €3.6m per year at Mönchengladbach. Bild state he will ‘immediately become a leader and top earner’ at his new club.
