On June 24th, Sport reported Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has called Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino to explain the Gunners’ potential project for him.
Earlier this week, claims in the UK stated that the north London club are interested in the 28-year-old, who is admired by Arteta.
Wednesday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo relays that and then provides their own take on Arsenal’s interest in Merino.
Merino is part of the Spain squad who made it to the Euro 2024 final after beating France on Tuesday. He scored a late goal to help La Roja overcome Germany in the quarter-final.
The north London club are of the belief they can secure the Spain international’s services this summer. It’s claimed Arteta would be ‘personally trying to convince’ his compatriot to join Arsenal.
The former Newcastle United man has a year left on his deal and has a €65m release clause. He’ll likely be available for a lot less.
Merino’s immediate focus is on the Euros final, after which, he will first hold talks with La Real over his future.
Real Sociedad will consider selling him this summer if he rejects the renewal offer and if a club offers ‘good sum of money’.
Unai Emery previously personally ruled out Aston Villa interest.
