The Spanish media seem to like the idea of Arsene Wenger lurking in the background of possible transfers.
On Wednesday, Wenger and Arsenal are doing the lurking elsewhere, with Spanish newspaper AS claiming there’s still interest in Shkodran Mustafi.
Arsenal have been very strongly linked with Mustafi for several weeks now, and AS explain if Arsenal had tried at the start of the transfer window then they would have had joy. Valencia needed to sell one of their better players, and had decided to keep hold of Andre Gomes if they possibly could.
The Portuguese midfielder signing for Barcelona was always going to make a Mustafi exit more difficult, although not impossible. Valencia starting the season looking weak in defence is another problem, the need to keep Mustafi is clear.
Anyway, Arsenal are lurking still. Not bidding, not even talking, just lurking.
