Arsenal could be handed the chance to sign Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia for less than his release clause, as Espanyol need a sale for their books.
That’s according to AS, who report that Arsenal remain in pole for the goalkeeper, but Barcelona and other European clubs are chasing him too.
Garcia has earned himself a long line of admirers thanks to his performances in Spain this season, where he has the most saves in La Liga. He’s only second in Europe behind Brentford’s Mark Flekken.
He’s been linked with clubs all over Europe and Arsenal are one of them. They were chasing his signature last summer and were quite advanced with a €20m offer before walking away from the deal.
AS now report that the truth is that Espanyol urgently needs to agree to a transfer worth at least €15m before June 30th so that they can avoid closing the 2024/25 financial year with losses. Thus, Arsenal could get him for cheaper and take advantage of that.
It may be a smart choice to move soon as well, as the goalkeeper’s clause could rise from its current €25m figure to €30m in situations; if he is called up to the Spanish national team or if he is not sold by the final 15 days of the transfer window.
It remains to be seen if anyone, including Arsenal, make their move, but there’s an opportunity to potentially save at least €10m if they want it.
