Over the weekend, we covered a report from Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, who claimed that Arsenal have made an ‘important proposal’ to sign Gelson Martins on loan from Atletico Madrid.

AS Monaco were another club interested in signing the winger and Spanish newspaper AS reported on Monday the Europa League winners have told the 23-year-old’s agent to find a new club for his client this month.

In today’s edition of AS the Gunners and the Ligue 1 outfit once again get a mention as these two clubs have ‘shown more interest’ to take the Portugal international.

Gelson prefers a move to the Premier League over joining the French club, giving an advantage for the north London outfit to his signing.

However, Arsenal will face competition from Newcastle United, who has also joined the race to sign him.

Los Rojiblancos are ready to sanction the player’s loan deal in the winter market and they want the operation to be completed before the end of this week.

If Arsenal interest is real and they don’t beat their Geordie rivals, then there’s going to be a lot of questions asked by the club’s fans.
