Granit Xhaka’s move from Arsenal to Bayer Leverkusen ‘is expected to go through this week’ as the Gunners close in on Declan Rice.
That’s according to Rheinische Post, who say the transfer is ‘nearing completion’ and ‘getting closer’ to being completed.
They report that it is has been clear since the end of May that Xhaka would be making the move from Arsenal to Leverkusen and the only question was when it would happen.
Nothing has happened for a month as Arsenal wanted to source a replacement, which they are now close to doing with the signing of Declan Rice.
That mega deal is in the home straight and so Xhaka ‘would finally be free’ to leave and make his return to the Bundesliga.
He is manager Xabi Alonso’s first choice to reinforce his midfield, with the Spaniard determined to add a player he can build his team around.
There is also the private perspective as Xhaka’s wife comes from the Rhineland and wants to return to that area this summer. That wish is set to be granted as a move to Leverkusen ‘is now imminent’. Indeed, according to RP, the transfer will be ‘officially confirmed later this week’.
They echo reports from elsewhere that Xhaka will sign a contract until 2027 at the club, as well as have the option of switching to coaching once his playing career comes to an end.
The newspaper also covers reports that his price tag has jumped from €15m to €25m but offer no confirmation or rejection of that notion but say that it would make him the third most expensive signing in Leverkusen’s history.
Whatever the price, it seems a deal is in place and will be completed this week, which is ‘ideal’ for the German as they’ll have Xhaka at the club for the start of pre-season training next Monday.
