Following Unai Emery’s exit from the Emirates in November 2019, Arsenal appointed Freddie Ljungberg as caretaker manager.
The Swede, who was in charge for six games, guided the north London club to only one win during his short stint.
Mikel Arteta became permanent manager at the Emirates last December, and the Swede was included in the Spaniard’s backroom staff. Ljungberg is one of the assistant coaches at Arsenal.
According to Sportbladet, the 43-year-old has now emerged as one of the candidates to become AIK Fotboll’s new manager.
On Monday, the Swedish side confirmed they have parted ways with Rikard Norling after a series of poor results this season. They managed only three wins in 11 league games, which has seen them languish in 12th spot.
Within the report, it’s claimed Arteta’s assistant, along with Olof Mellberg and Stuart Baxter, are the ‘dream names’ to replace Norling. The latter two are currently at Helsingborgs IF and Indian side Odisha FC respectively.
AIK sporting director Henrik Jurelius has neither confirmed nor denied Ljungberg being one of the potential candidates for the vacant managerial post at the club.
“We are reviewing all possible alternatives. Not interested in going into deeper discussions. I will not go deeper into any of the names. Our ambition is to communicate when we have finished finding Norling’s replacement,” Jurelius said.
Jurelius admitted he remains hopeful a new coach can be appointed before this weekend, because AIK host IF Elfsborg on August 2nd.
Time should tell whether Ljungberg will continue at Arsenal or move to AIK.
