On Tuesday, Marseille were playing Montpellier, and comfortably winning 2-0 when Nuno Tavares lost his head a little bit.
The Portuguese defender, on loan from Arsenal, was in the opposition’s box, lost the ball and followed that up by taking a swipe at Arnaud Souquet.
His teammate, Christopher Jullien, came to his aid and pushed Tavares, who retaliated by pushing back.
There was absolutely no need for the Arsenal loanee to do what he did, and the referee responded to the whole thing by sending the left-back off.
Igor Tudor, his manager, made it clear he was angry at his player and explained he would be fined, but the talk about the incident didn’t stop there.
Rolland Courbis, a former manager turned pundit, had his say on the matter and pointed out that these types of incidents is why Tavares hasn’t made it at Arsenal.
He said on RMC Sport, relayed by Top Mercato: “When you see what Tavares did yesterday, you understand better why he hasn’t managed to impose himself at the very top level, and that’s a shame, because he has interesting qualities. You have to hope that what happens against Montpellier will make him understand things.
“You don’t even have to tell him off. You have to hope that this tome out will help him see things differently. It’s his last free pass, for his career at Marseille and his career full stop.”
Prior to getting sent off, Tavares had had a good game, having opened the score in the 47th minute.
