As long as Petr Cech stays at Arsenal, there is little chance that Wojciech Szczesny regains his starting spot.

However, considering the former Czech Republic international is 34, you have to ask yourself how long he will continue to play professional football, even if goalkeepers have longer careers than the players in front of them on the pitch.

When Szczesny left for Roma for the first time last season, Arsène Wenger maintained he remained part of his long-term plans, meaning him playing regularly in Italy was a necessity.

The Polish goalkeeper did just that last season, playing in all competitions for the Serie A side, but his game time this time around, for his second loan spell, might be limited.

According to Il Tempo, Luciano Spalletti is keen to give newcomer Alisson some time in between the sticks, and the Europa League would be the perfect opportunity for him to do that.

This means Szczesny will only play in the league, but if his Brazilian counterpart ends up impressing more than him, who knows what might happen in the long run?

Competition often forces players to up their standards, and upping his standards is exactly what Szczesny is going to gave to do.
