Arsenal’s 4-3 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday could have been more embarrassing than it was. Jurgen Klopp’s men were opening up Arsenal with far too much ease, and it had all been so predictable.
Arsene Wenger is short on defenders and that’s not going to change hugely for a while, unless he manages to bring someone in to the club. It’s the same situation upfront, with Olivier Giroud not having enough competition, or an adequate replacement for when he’s not available.
Arsenal are looking. Once again they had an official at a Portuguese match this weekend, continuing this season as they have done previously.
Benfica won 2-0 away at Tondela in front of 4973 spectators (the capacity is only 5000), and Portuguese newspaper O Jogo have revealed Arsenal had someone on the official attendees list. They were joined by several other clubs, and it’s not immediately obvious who the target was.
Earlier this year, Arsenal were, perhaps bizarrely, linked with a move for Benfica’s Konstantinos Mitroglou. It was front page news in Portugal, but a shock, and almost a cause for disgust, among Arsenal fans.
Mitroglou had a torrid time in England with Fulham, but he’s done much better for Benfica.
Mitroglou aside, Benfica central defender Victor Lindelof has been linked with several big clubs recently, but he had a poor match.
