Earlier this week, it was reported Arsenal have included Real Sociedad star Mikel Merino in their target for this summer.
On Wednesday, Mundo Deportivo stated Mikel Arteta is personally trying to convince the 28-year-old to join the Gunners. It was also reported he will first hold talks with La Real over his future after Spain’s Euros campaign.
El Diario Vasco mention Arsenal’s interest when given their take on the player’s situation at the club.
The Spain international has been offered an extension as his current deal lasts until 2025. The La Liga side believe he’ll leave in this window because he hasn’t responded to their renewal proposal.
Merino has been at the club since 2018 and the report says he doesn’t want to leave them as a free agent.
If he doesn’t sign a new deal, the player wants to help Real Sociedad raise funds through his sale this summer. Taking his age into account, this would be the Spaniard’s last chance to earn a big contract at a club that can compete regularly at the highest level.
El Diario Vasco state this is where Arsenal would come into the picture as they are one of the clubs ‘bidding the most’ to sign the former Newcastle United man. Arteta would be delighted to have his compatriot at his disposal, to further bolster his side’s midfield.
Barcelona and Atlético Madrid are also interested in Merino, but the north London club have better financial resources to overcome the La Liga duo in the transfer race.
To sum it up, Real Sociedad don’t expect Merino to continue with them next season and Arsenal are bidding the most to sign him.
