Leeds United’s Pontus Jansson has revealed club owner Andrea Radrizzani contacted him after Sweden’s game against South Korea to praise his performance.
Jansson made his World Cup debut in Sweden’s 1-0 victory last week.
In an interview with Fotbollskanalen, the defender was asked about being contacted by the Leeds United chief: “He praised me and he was proud of my efforts. That I did good and he told me. He said I was the only one from Leeds who is at the World Cup and he was proud and happy about it.”
Due to Victor Lindelof falling ill on the eve of Sweden’s opening game of the World Cup, Jansson got a rare start for his country.
This ultimately cost him his place in last weekend’s loss to Germany and it’s expected Lindelof will keep his spot against Mexico tomorrow. Sweden still have a chance of making the second round of the competition, but their task has been made more difficult after Germany’s injury time winner.
There’s a wave of optimism around Leeds United at the moment, after the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa as the club’s new manager.
Jansson seems happy to be part of that and has previously spoken of wanting to know the club’s ambitions. Appointing Bielsa is a big statement, and will have have surely impressed the Swedish defender, as will Radrizzani contacting him.
