Newcastle United star Alexander Isak has heaped praise on his teammates after the Tyneside club came from behind to secure three points against West Ham United at the weekend.
Speaking to Viaplay after the tie, relayed by Aftonbladet, the striker revealed that it was one of the “strangest” matches he’s ever been part of.
Isak gave Newcastle the lead in the sixth minute and it was cancelled out by Michail Antonio’s goal in the 21st minute. West Ham then took the lead just before the break and Jarrod Bowen scored the Hammers’ third goal three minutes into the second half.
The Sweden international played a key role in helping the Magpies turn things around in the final quarter as they secured a 4-3 win against David Moyes’ side.
Isak started Newcastle’s comeback by scoring his second goal in 77th minute and assisted Harvey Barnes’ equaliser in the 83rd minute. It was the latter who scored the winner that helped Eddie Howe’s side seal a victory over West Ham.
The 24-year-old has opened up about the dressing room reaction after West Ham took the lead and what happened during the half-time break.
“This was probably the strangest game I’ve been in. We started well, then West Ham scored a goal out of nowhere and the air was knocked out of us,” he said.
“During the break we talked about going out and giving our all in the second half and that’s what we did. It was an incredible team effort.”
That effort paid off and Newcastle United will hope it can carry them for the rest of the season.
