Christian Eriksen has finally signed a contract renewal with Tottenham Hotspur, and it was a long time coming.
The lack of a new contract led to all kinds of rumours about a potential exit, or disagreement over salary package, and the player’s agent Martin Schoots has confirmed there was indeed interest.
However, Schoots had no interest in publicising it and trying to use the situation to force Tottenham’s hand, and get a better contract. Agents often push the idea of interest in their clients, but Schoots is adamant that’s not his style.
“But it’s just not our style. It is useless to talk about something with a newspaper the day after a club called. It does not give promote a good and calm environment where the player can doing well.
“Now that everything is closed down, I can tell you that the situation has never really changed since Christian was 14 years old, and the first club rang. They have continued to come in the latest period. There has been definite interest from four Champions League teams from France, Spain, Italy and England. Two of them have played in a Champions League final not so long ago.”
There’s no suggestion that Eriksen’s head was turned, and that shows his commitment to Tottenham. BT say they can reveal some of the interested teams as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.
Schoots talked about the interest from PSG, which in the public domain after the club’s former manager Laurent Blanc spoke about Eriksen: “One of the managers was Laurent Blanc, who even spoke openly about his interest some time ago, a former world champion.
“Christian is flattered by all the interest, but he never wanted to do anything with it. As I said, he’s just happy at Tottenham. And he has always wanted to be there for a long time.”
