After having impressed during his trial at Burnley, the Premier League side offered Swedish striker Joel Mumbongo a contract in October 2019.
Sean Dyche included the 21-year-old in the squad for the Clarets’ final two league games of the last season against Norwich City and Brighton & Hove Albion, but the frontman hasn’t featured for Burnley’s first team, despite training with them during the pre-season.
Mumbongo scored two big goals for the English club’s U23 side in November and his performances saw him being short-listed for the monthly awards.
The Swede’s contract with his current employer runs down at the end of this season and according to Fotbollskanalen, the player cannot answer if ‘there will be’ a new contract offer for him from Burnley.
“I think my agent is the best person to answer [about new contract]. For me, it’s just working out. As long as I’m here, my responsibility is to go in every day and work on what I need to work on,” Mumbongo told Fotbollskanalen.
Dyche’s side are currently in the relegation zone after winning only one of their 10 league matches this season. They are 18th in the table with six points and are one point behind 17th place Fulham.
“There’s still some time left. It’s an okay start, but you put that behind you and work forward. If you have a bad game, then it’s over. The next training continues to work on,” the Swede said.
