Bought from Porto and becoming, albeit briefly, Huddersfield’s record signing before Steve Mounié was purchased from Montpellier, it took some time for Laurent Depoitre to make his way into the Terriers’ first-team, but he’s there now.
The Belgian striker has started the last seven league games, and scored two goals, including one in his side’s improbably 2-1 victory over Manchester United towards the end of October.
Having struggled at Porto, in what should have been his big move following an impressive season at Genk, Depoitre is now happy in England, and he said as much when interviewed by DH on Le Grand Débrief.
He said: “After the difficult year I went through in Portugal, it’s true that playing in the Premier League, and it’s going really well, we’re getting good results, you can say it’s a kind of rebirth.
“It’s true that there’s a lot of competition [with Mounié], but each game I try and prove that I deserve a spot in the team, and, for now, that’s what I’m able to do”.
Continuing by stating it was ‘incredible’ to be in the Premier League with all its stars, Depoitre explained it was a ‘pleasure’ to be on the pitch against such big teams, and revealed his best moment so far was that goal against Manchester United.
However, if you were to believe the rumours over the summer, Depoitre’s season could have been a lot different, with Anderlecht reportedly interested in his services.
Yet, for the striker, that wasn’t even an option.
He said: “They were more rumours, plus I wanted to stay abroad rather than return to Belgium. That wasn’t my top priority.”
