Liverpool made a concrete attempt to sign Kylian Mbappé in 2022, according to L’Equipe.

The forward arrived at Real Madrid in the summer, after leaving Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent.

Prior to his arrival at the La Liga side, Liverpool were repeatedly named as an interested party.

Jürgen Klopp was an admirer of the 25-year-old and was in contact with Mbappé and his entourage. The German coach left Anfield at the end of last season, but he could have managed the attacker in his last two years at Liverpool.

Two years ago, the France international came close to leaving the Paris club. He reversed his decision and signed an extension in May 2022.

L’Equipe claim he felt ‘betrayed’ by the PSG project. Therefore, he asked to leave in the summer 2022 window, several weeks after signing an extension. Liverpool and the La Liga side made offers, and the Ligue 1 winners didn’t want to hear about Real Madrid.

It’s claimed Mbappé ‘agreed to join Liverpool’, after they offered €200m to former PSG sporting director Antero Henrique.

Within PSG, L’Equipe claim there are two versions of this story. One source states Liverpool only made a verbal offer, while another denies receiving a proposal from the Reds.

‘Liverpool never came with a written offer. And Liverpool could never get that money,’ a PSG source was quoted as saying.

‘As soon as Mbappé renewed his contract, we agreed that in the event of an interesting offer for the player and the club, a solution would be found. After 2022, the only serious offer arrived from Saudi Arabia and was accepted by the club. We are trying to build the narration of a story that never existed.’
