Southampton are in a battle for the signing of São Paulo fullback Wellington, according to reports today.
The news doesn’t come from Brazil, but actually from Italy, where newspaper Tuttosport shares a story on Torino’s interest in the player.
It’s said that the Serie A side moved first and already placed a €3.5m bid for the transfer, and that’s unlikely to be enough.
Following Torino’s bid, Southampton reportedly started to move and should try the signing as well.
São Paulo are said to be making a high request, worth €6m or €7m, with the agents’ commissions included.
Now what’s interesting is that the player’s contract with the Brazilian side expires at the end of the year, so with some patience, he could be signed for free in a few months.
The problem is obviously the competition, with clubs willing to spend a few million to get the signing guaranteed. Now it’s time for Southampton to do their part and outbid Torino.
Tuttosport acknowledges that the Saints have more ‘firepower’ to win this race.
