‘Negotiations have started’ – Liverpool in talks to sell player on a permanent basis

Liverpool and Mainz have opened negotiations over a permanent deal for defender Sepp van den Berg, with him keen to make the move.

That’s according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, who say Mainz are optimistic of striking a deal with Liverpool soon for the 22-year-old defender.

Van den Berg has spent this season on loan with the German side, this third straight year away from Anfield after loan spells with Preston and Schalke.

This loan has proven to be the best for him so far, with the Dutchman establishing himself as a key player and making 33 appearances in the Bundesliga in total.

The Germans had an option to sign him on a permanent basis but have instead ignored that, preferring a different deal with Liverpool as finances are tight.

Plettenberg confirms those talks are now well underway, and says ‘negotiations have started’ between Liverpool and Mainz over a permanent deal.

Mainz want to keep the 22-year-old and he is eager to stay too, which has left the Mainz bosses optimistic that they can find an agreement with Liverpool soon.

It’ll all likely depend on what the Reds want for the defender, who appears to be set for a move back to Germany regardless.
