Player likely to swap Everton for MLS – Return to homeland not on the cards

André Gomes could be set for a move to MLS once his contract with Everton expires at the end of this month.

That’s according to journalist Bruno Andrade, who says the 30-year-old won’t be returning to Portuguese football at this moment in time.

Gomes is set to become a free agent at the end of this month after Everton elected not to extend his contract.

His departure will bring an end to a frustrating spell at Everton, who he joined on loan in August 2018 and then signed for permanently a year later.

That loan spell convinced Everton to spend €25m on him but he would only go on to make 114 appearances during his time at the club as a series of injury problems limited his game time, eventually seeing him sent out on loan to Lille in the 2022/23 season before playing a bit part role this year.

It’s that which has led to him being released this summer, and the fact he was among the highest earners at the club but not a part of Sean Dyche’s plans.

A return to Portugal had been mooted but Andrade says that is not on the cards and he is instead dealing with offers from America.

The 30-year-old has enquiries from MLS and playing there is the ‘most likely path’ for him at this point once he leaves Everton officially.
