HSV Hamburg are hoping Everton resist Premier League interest in Amadou Onana this month, as they’d benefit more from him moving to a European club.
That’s according to BILD, who look at the player today and how Hamburg are set to gain from their former player should he leave Everton in the near future.
Reports at the beginning of this month have claimed that Arsenal are keen on a deal for Onana, identifying him as a long-term replacement for Thomas Partey and potentially the future of their midfield.
Talks with Everton and the player are believed to already be underway, although initial confidence a deal could be done this month have since been pulled back.
Either way, the Belgian star has suitors, with reports elsewhere claiming that Barcelona and Manchester United are ‘showing great interest’ in the 22-year-old.
Onana joined Hamburg as a youngster from Hoffenheim in July 2020 but moved on a year later to Lille in a €12.6m deal.
A year later, he joined Everton in a €35m deal and that saw the German side pocket another €5.6m after agreeing a 20% sell on clause of the transfer profits in the original deal with Lille.
But that’s not all they could pocket as, if Onana were to move from Everton this month or in the summer, Hamburg would be set to receive another 20% of the profits.
BILD explain that Lille are owed 20% of the profits Everton make but Lille would still owe Hamburg after that, with the Blues believed to be looking for at least €70m.
It’s a complicated structure to say the least but they’d get something in compensation. The one caveat is that the money would only come their way if Onana changes football associations.
In other words, if he moves to another club in the Premier League then they won’t receive anything.
So HSV’s bosses are ‘certainly hoping’ that Everton resist the interest from Arsenal and Manchester United, with a move to Barcelona or another European side far more desirable as they’ll again pocket something from their former player.
