Peter Bosz has told Algemeen Dagblad that he rejected an opportunity to join Aston Villa in 2022.

Last October, the Villans had parted ways with Steven Gerrard and appointed Unai Emery as his successor. Earlier that month, Lyon had relieved Bosz from his job and he was then immediately approached by Aston Villa.

According to AD, the 60-year-old had ‘serious doubts’ about taking up the Aston Villa job and after analysing things in detail, he decided that they played too many ‘long balls’.

“I thought: can I bring in the football that suits me?” he said.

Aston Villa and their fans won’t be upset Bosz wasn’t keen, given it allowed Emery to arrive at Villa Park.

The Spaniard played a key role in guiding the Villans to qualify for the UEFA Conference League and has also helped them enjoy an impressive campaign this season.

Aston Villa are currently third in the table, trailing leaders Arsenal by a point and are four points ahead of Manchester City, who are in fourth spot.

The Dutchman, who joined PSV Eindhoven last summer, has hailed the job Emery is doing at Aston Villa.

“Sure, Villa have invested heavily. But all clubs in England do that. It’s especially clever of Emery. He proves once again that the choice of a trainer is the choice of the most important man within your club,” Bosz explained.

AD say Feyenoord manager Arne Slot ‘wholeheartedly agrees’ with his compatriot’s take on Emery.
