Newcastle United’s hopes of signing highly rated Celta Vigo youngster Gabri Veiga may have been handed a boost, with Real Madrid not planning on activating his release clause.
That’s according to Cadena SER, who say that despite Madrid keeping track of the youngster for months, they don’t want to spend the money required to get him.
They explain that Veiga’s current contract with Celta Vigo includes a €40m release clause for any interested parties trying to get him out of the club this summer.
Madrid are one of them but they want to ‘try to reduce it’ if they can by including a player that their fellow Spaniard ‘would like’.
That’s an issue because there are not many players in the current Real Madrid set up that would fit into Celta’s wage structure but, according to journalist Antón Meana “there are players from the youth academy who are very much to Luis Campos’ liking.
That has seen Rafa Marín, from Madrid’s Castilla side, already put on the table with Madrid “going for €25 million and a player” according to fellow journalist Francisco José Delgado.
He also added that Madrid have told the player not to leave Celta ‘without them being informed’ first, perhaps so they can challenge any other suitors for his signature.
Newcastle United are one of those who are interested, with a report yesterday explaining that they ‘will do the unspeakable’ to secure his signature.
That would suggest the Magpies are more than willing to pay Veiga’s release clause, which therefore should put them ahead of Madrid in the pecking order.
The Spanish giants’ reluctance to match that figure and instead negotiate Celta down is an advantage to Newcastle, who may do well to make their move now rather than waiting until the summer.
