French side Strasbourg have ‘concluded an agreement’ with Aston Villa to sign defender Frédéric Guilbert, who will terminate his deal at Villa Park before making the switch.

That’s according to Dernières Nouvelles d’Alsace, who say the Frenchman is set to pull on a Strasbourg shirt for the third time in his career.

They report that Guilbert ‘has been released’ by Aston Villa after a disappointing spell at the club that has concluded with him being completely out of the picture under Unai Emery.

His contract had been set to expire in the summer but he has instead reached an agreement to terminate it early before signing a three and a half year deal with Strasbourg.

That will see him embark on his third spell with the club after a loan from January to May 2021 and another from Aston Villa last season.

His latest move is only conditional on the completion of a medical, which is booked in for next Monday. Guilbert will travel to France on Sunday evening.

According to DNA’s information the contract does include a relegation clause, which means it could be ended early if Strasbourg drop out of Ligue 1 this season.

The crucial point, though, is that he will be leaving Aston Villa this month after they agreed to release him six months early in return for a percentage on any future sale.
