Aston Villa defender Frédéric Guilbert has confirmed he has been put on the transfer list at the club, despite never having a conversation with manager Unai Emery.

Guilbert has been at Aston Villa since signing in a €5m deal from SM Caen in 2019 but spent last season on loan as Strasbourg, first joining in January 2021.

He renewed that the following summer but returned to Aston Villa in June this year, when it had been expected he would leave on a permanent basis.

That never happened and he’s since found himself relegated to the Under 21s, with former manager Steven Gerrard demoting him earlier this year and Unai Emery yet to bring him back.

That looks unlikely to happen any time soon and a move away in the January transfer window would be the ideal solution for all parties.

Guilbert has confirmed that is the plan, despite the fact he has not yet spoken to Emery since his arrival as Gerrard’s replacement.

“Now I’m looking to the future. I’ve never had a discussion with Unai Emery,” he told Club 1906, relayed by Alsa Sports.

“I can’t stay in this situation forever. We are studying the different possibilities with my entourage, whether it is a loan with an option to buy or a transfer.

“The only certainty is that I need to get playing time at a club to get back on track. That’s the most important thing for me.

“It’s no secret (that he’s on the transfer market). For the moment, there is nothing, but I am open to offers. I’m on the transfer market, what matters to me is to play and to find pleasure quickly.”
