Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was spotted at the Copa America in the match between Argentina and Chile.
Initially, many suggested Klopp had his eyes on Napoli star Gonzalo Higuain, but later there were also claims of Liverpool interest in River Plate defender Gabriel Mercado.
The player had also agreed to sign for Monterrey, but the Mexican club yesterday announced Mercado has decided to break the agreement.
According to an official statement on the club’s website: “Mr. Gabriel Mercado broke, unilaterally, the agreement that existed between the player himself and our club.”
Argentine media believe interest from Liverpool made Mercado break the agreement, as the player is keen on playing in the Premier League.
There are similar reports on major Argentine websites like newspaper Clarin and Infobae.
It is reported River Plate had agreed a fee of around €2m for Mercado with Monterrey, and a similar fee is expected should Liverpool be also genuinely interested.
