Newcastle United made an approach for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, according to local reports today.
Outlet Globo Esporte says the player’s parent side Corinthians received ‘in the past few days’ contact from an agent who claims to have an offer from the Magpies.
The club are now waiting for an official bid, and the story points out how interesting it would be to negotiate with an English side, given the power of the pound over Brazilian currency.
Ederson is currently loaned to Fortaleza, and it’s said they know nothing about the interest. The club weren’t contacted by Corinthians or the agents.
Since it isn’t known how much Newcastle would offer for the player, it’s obviously hard to guess how likely the move is. However, with Corinthians once again struggling with money issues, it shouldn’t be hard for the Magpies to convince them of a deal.
Now since his loan at Fortaleza runs until December, the Premier League side would need to sort that issue as well. The North East Brazilian club also are said to have the priority for the purchase, but not the buying option, so they’d need to match Newcastle’s bid to keep him.
