Fabián Balbuena was a regular figure in West Ham United’s defence in the first half of the season as the centre-back started in 12 of their first 15 league matches.
However, things haven’t being going well for the 29-year-old in 2021 as he has made only one appearance, which came in an FA Cup tie against Doncaster Rovers in January.
With a contract expiring at the end of the season, there were rumours about possible exit in the winter market.
He refused a “juicy proposal” from the Middle East in the last window, and this was confirmed by his agent, Renato Bittar, earlier this month. The representative had also dismissed rumours of Lazio’s interest in the Paraguay international.
During an interview with Versus Radio, Balbuena backed his agents’ comments over Lazio links and revealed there will be talks with David Moyes’ side over his future.
“Certainly, in the coming days we will sit down with the management to talk about it, West Ham have an option to renew.”
When his move to West Ham was confirmed in 2018, the Premier League side didn’t mention having any option to further extend his contract by 12 months or more.
Therefore, it’s not clear whether the “option to renew” mentioned by Balbuena is part of the existing contract or if he’s in talks with the London club over a new deal.
