After Bruno Alves’ red card during the friendly match against England at Wembley last Thursday, teammates and the coach have all commented on the incident. O Jogo have published a few of the quotes about the challenge and the referee’s decision.
The manager Fernando Santos has revealed that Bruno “has already apologised to everybody”, and described the play as a “thoughtless move”. He says the defender is “more than regretful” for what happened.
Former Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho said the referee should’ve taken it easier: “It’s a particular game, he could have shown a yellow card, because it was clearly a moment of recklessness.”
Bruno Alves also had his say on the matter.
The 34-year-old was clearly disappointed after being sent off, but was happy to have the backing of his teammates: “It’s good not to repeat it, the team was damaged and lost, but I felt the support of my teammates after talking to them.”
“It is a play that can happen and I just have to thank the commitment and determination that the team had in the second half. The game was going well for me, I really wanted to play it, especially at a fantastic stadium like Wembley, but that challenge happened, I have to admit the mistake and take the consequences.”
Harry Kane was lucky Alves didn’t cause any damage, so was the Portugal player, because there’s a possibility the incident could be looked at and a harsher ban handed out.
