After waiting for a year, Leroy Sané saw his wish to join Bayern Munich fulfilled when they reached an agreement with Manchester City in July.
Earlier reports stated City sporting director Txiki Begiristain ‘pushed until the end’ for a swap deal involving Sané and Kingsley Coman, but the treble winners weren’t interested in letting the Frenchman leave.
The Citizens asked for another player in exchange for the Germany international.
According to Kicker, the Premier League side had the idea of taking David Alaba as part of the deal for the winger.
Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić ‘briefly discussed’ this possibility with the defender’s agent Pini Zahavi, but it was never mentioned further within the Bundesliga club’s management.
The swap deal idea involving Sané and Alaba never became concrete and City ended up settling for money from the sale for the former Schalke star.
The 28-year-old hasn’t signed an extension with Hansi Flick’s side and after months of negotiating, Bayern have now withdrawn their latest renewal offer for the versatile defender.
This week’s edition of SportBild explained City, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus all have interest in Alaba, who could be available on a free transfer after this season.
