Pep Clotet is set to leave Birmingham City at the end of the Championship season, and that’s set the club on the search for a replacement.
They’re currently 16th in the division and will want someone to help them climb the table, whilst doing so on a limited budget. Several options within English football have already been linked, yet with Birmingham having time to prepare, which isn’t often the case when a manager leaves, they can also look further afield.
That’s led to claims this week of interest in FC Groningen manager Danny Buijs. The 38 year old is in his second managerial job, having joined the Dutch club in 2018. Ninth in the Eredivisie, there’s some optimism that the current manager can help lead the club to better things in the not too distant future.
Birmingham City interest would therefore be a problem.
“We are very satisfied with how we work together. We are building something together and are on the same page. Of course you sometimes have discussions, that is part of it, but we both have the same perspective for the future. We want to move forward with FC Groningen. It is not without reason that we extended Danny’s contract by two years last season.”
Addressing the Birmingham City claims directly, he added: “For the time being I assume that it is not very concrete. If that changes, we will discuss this with each other.”
