With football currently on hold, all fans and newspapers can do, other than frantically try and keep up to date with the Covid-19 outbreak, is look forward to the transfer window and what could happen in the summer.
For Olivier Giroud, whose contract at Chelsea ends in June, that means assessing the offers landing on his agent’s desk; one of which will be from Lazio.
The Serie A side already tried to sign the player in January but were blocked by his club, but that hasn’t put them off, with many newspapers in Italy claiming they will come back again for a free transfer in the coming months.
Gazzetta dello Sport are among them, once again looking at the situation on Monday, reporting Lazio’s terms for the summer move start with their offer from the last window, even if they are aware they will face competition for his services.
However, they are also ‘convinced they can win’ the race for the Frenchman, seemingly banking on the fact he already said yes to them once in the past.
That was more out of desperation than anything, but with the prospect of the 2020 Euros being delayed by a year and the uncertainty over whether or not the current season will be finished, the situation has changed for Giroud.
He can now assess what is best for him long-term rather than just thinking about making Didier Deschamps’ squad in the coming months.
