Manchester United’s Guillermo Varela has undergone an operation after suffering an injury whilst on loan to Frankfurt.

Uruguay’s Tenfield report that Varela went through a successful operation on Tuesday, and will be out of action for three to four months.

Tenfield say Varela’s left ankle was operated on at Frankfurt’s Trauma Clinic BG, and he’ll now begin his rehabilitation process.

German football breaks for winter in mid December, so even the best case of a return in three months would mean Varela doesn’t play again this year.

The 23 year old defender will hope he’s able to return in time for the mini pre season which Bundesliga clubs have before the football starts again on January 20th.

It’s a huge blow for the young footballer, who showed flashes last season which suggested he had a long term future with the Premier League club. The loan to Frankfurt was an opportunity to play more regularly, but the injury has put those plans on hold.
