Back in May, we brought you news, via Sportbild, that Arsenal remained keen on Jean-Philippe Gbamin this summer.
The Gunners have a longstanding interest in the midfielder and even saw a €30m bid rejected last summer.
Their interest in the midfielder has not waned, and SportBild believed that the Gunners could return with a €35m bid this year.
Whether that happens remains to be seen, but it seems his agent has been busy nonetheless. In an interview with Fussball Transfers, he says he’s spoken with several other Premier League clubs, including Tottenham.
“In January 2018 Klopp called Mainz and wanted to sign him as a centre-back, who also helps out in midfield. But Mainz did not want to let him go in the middle of the relegation battle. In the summer, Liverpool signed Fabinho instead,“ says Collignon.
“I had meetings with Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, Everton and many other clubs. He is on the shortlists. However, he is not a top candidate because his exact position is unclear.“
It certainly seems as if Liverpool won’t come calling again given they’ve got Fabinho now. Everton seems an unlikely destination too given their priorities elsewhere.
Gbamin could be a good signing for Arsenal or Tottenham, though. The Gunners definitely need a new defensive midfielder, particularly if Granit Xhaka or Lucas Torreria leave.
They also need a centre-back, another position Gbamin can play in and where his agent, in particular, sees his future.
Tottenham doesn’t need reinforcement in defence, but their midfield definitely needs bolstering.
It’s likely any potential clubs will wait until after the Africa Cup of Nations is done before firming up their interest anyway.
