Around two weeks ago we brought you news from France that Roma were looking to move Maxime Gonalons on this summer.
L’Equipe claimed the midfielder, who spent this season on loan at Sevilla, would be heading out on loan once more.
England seemed his likeliest destination, with West Ham ‘in contact’ with the player and Everton apparently talking to the club about a potential move.
Little more has been said about it since then. Everton’s priority is to get a permanent deal for Andre Gomes over the line, something they’re close to doing.
They believe it will take between €4m and €5m to sign the Frenchman. There’s no mention if Everton would want to pay it, but West Ham are okay with it.
Whether Everton are actually interested is debatable. They don’t desperately need a central midfielder, particularly if they get a deal for Gomes completed.
Furthermore, Gonalons doesn’t fit into their model. Marcel Brands is targeting young players with sell on value for the Blues, not 30-year-olds with a very chequered recent injury list.
It would be a gamble, albeit a low-cost one.
Given that they already have Tom Davies, Morgan Schneiderlin and James McCarthy sitting on the bench as well, a move for Gonalons would make little sense unless at least one of those are moving on.
