We’ve got some bad news for any Newcastle United fans who got excited with the club’s interest in Benfica winger Rafa Silva.

Despite the rumours of a move in the past few days, the front page story of newspaper Record reports today an agreement for the player’s new five-year contract.

The winger is having his deal extended from 2021 to 2024, and his release clause will continue to be of €60m, the outlet writes.

Silva was demanding a pay raise because of the great importance he’s been having in the team, and the club and his agent finally got to a deal this week.

Embed from Getty ImagesRecord makes sure to mention that the agreement was found ‘in the same week when the agent confirmed Newcastle’s interest’.

At the start of the week, representative Antonio Araujo had gone public saying the Magpies were following the winger, despite his wish to stay at Benfica.

So maybe the threat from the Premier League was just a little push for the player to have his demands met.
