Let’s take you back to the days when Anzhi Makhachkala were trying to buy their way to the heights of European football.
Part of their second wave of signings, in the summer of 2011, was Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez, a Belgian born Spanish-Moroccan winger who currently plays for Benfica.
Eventually choosing to play internationally for Morocco, the 28-year-old didn’t enjoy the most consistent of seasons with the Portuguese club, being used mostly as a rotation option.
This lack of consistent first-team football means the player could be looking for a way out, and it’s his former club Standard Liège, where he started his career, who are keen on bringing him back.
However, according to VoetbalBelgië, the Belgian side, who are looking to bolster their team to challenge for the Jupiler League title, may face competition from Leicester.
According to the Belgian website, both the Premier League champions and PSV Eindhoven are interested in the Moroccan international, and Liège could struggle to compete financially with such clubs.
If the interest is genuine, and we somewhat doubt it is, then you would have Leicester as favourites for his signature, but considering he’s already had two separate stints with Liège in the past, don’t discard him returning to his childhood club.
