It’s a big day for Ibai Gomez.
His Alaves side are facing his former team Athletic Club Bilbao this evening, and that former team want to sign him back.
Gomez’s contract expires in the summer, but given Athletic are having a disaster of a season, and given the competition for the player’s signature, an approach in the winter market is expected.
Leeds United are also keen, and Spanish newspaper AS back that up today, saying ‘they want him’, along with Leicester City, Eibar, Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo.
Should Gomez impress tonight (it’s live on Eleven Sports, by the way) then Athletic’s fans are going to be hounding the club to sign him, and they have some influence. The Basque club are currently in the midst of presidential campaigns for a new man at the top, and it’s the club’s members who will decide.
This isn’t the best scenario for Leeds United, with the competition clearly serious.
The Spanish media have been talking up offers, and it’s probably for the best if the Championship club get in there as early as possible.
