Daniel Amartey has found himself being linked with a move to Bayern Munich, just 18 months after leaving Leicester City on a free transfer.
Merkur cover the situation today and how Bayern could have potentially looked at the free agent market to help cover for an injury crisis at the club.
Vincent Kompany’s options have been severely limited over the last few weeks, with a ‘wave of injuries’ seeing several names ruled out.
Dayot Upamecano is out with cartilage damage in his knee, Alphonso Davies has torn a cruciate ligament, and Hiroki Ito has a broken metatarsal. They’ve joined Tarek Buchmann, Alexsandar Pavlovic and Kingsley Coman in the treatment room, which is becoming increasingly packed.
That injury crisis has led to reports that Bayern could bring in free agents as immediate reinforcement for the squad, and Merkur report former Leicester City man Daniel Amartey is one of them.
He’s one of ‘several options’ on the list as he’s currently available on a free after being released by Besiktas. He’d been with the Turkish side since 2023 after joining them on a free from Leicester.
He’s seen as a potential experienced solution to bolster the squad depth rather than being a player with ‘long-term Bayern stature’.
There’s a problem, though, the German football association won’t allow it. They prohibit free transfers outside of the summer and winter transfer periods, arguing that allowing them would lead to ‘distortions of competition’.
That’ll ruin any chance of the former Leicester man getting a big move, but the fact he’s being linked in the first place 18 months after leaving the Foxes on a free transfer shows that anything is in fact possible.
