Back in the summer window, when Manchester United were looking for a new goalkeeper, Benfica’s Odysseas Vlachodimos was said to be a target.
The Portuguese media reported that the Red Devils made approaches for the transfer, but that rumour soon disappeared when Erik ten Hag’s side signed a couple of other players for the position.
It turns out that as Vlachodimos was interviewed by Greek outlet Gazzetta, he was asked about Manchester United’s interest, and confirmed that the possibility of a move to Old Trafford was real.
“Yes, there was,” said the player.
What is strange about all this is that this week, Braga goalkeeper Matheus also claimed that he was approached by Manchester United and even spoke to Erik ten Hag about this move. So it becomes clear that the Red Devils had multiple options for their back-up goalkeeper.
The Old Trafford side ended up signing André Onana from Inter Milan and Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce.
Vlachodimos joined Nottingham Forest in a €4.9m deal, and made his debut in the win over Aston Villa at the weekend.
