Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Hugo Bueno has been on loan at Feyenoord, who have no option of retaining him beyond this season. As things stand, the left-back has to return to Wolves in the summer.

The Spaniard has played 28 games in all competitions for the Eredivisie club this season.

At the weekend, the Wolves owned player was replaced after the first half in Feyenoord’s 4-1 win over Heracles Almelo. He was replaced by Gijs Smal after the break.

In the post-match press conference, Feyenoord manager Robin van Persie explained the reason for the substitution and Soccer News have relayed his comments.

“I only want players on the field who are fully fit. This time, the choice fell on Gijs coming on as a substitute,” he said.

As well as the 22-year-old and Smal, Van Perise can also rely upon Quilindschy Hartman, who returned from a long-term injury earlier this year.

When asked if this makes it difficult to field Bueno regularly, Van Persie explained: “Yes, that is already the case in advance. It is a difficult choice between three good left backs.

“They all have their own story. Hugo may go back to England in a few weeks. Gijs is on a long contract and Q still has a year of contract. However, I make choices based on football, not on contracts.”

Recent claims have stated the Dutch club could try to extend the Wolves man’s loan deal. Their manager has now confirmed this, while insisting that an agreement will depend on the Premier League side.

“Yes, definitely. We are looking at the option to extend his loan. Of course, that requires two parties to reach an agreement. We are very happy with Hugo. He fits in with Feyenoord,” he added.

Bueno’s contract at Molineux lasts until 2028 and Vítor Pereira and Wolves have to make a decision on the fullback’s future in the summer.
