Virgil van Dijk’s long term injury absence remains big news for his club team and national side. The defender has gone through a knee operation and there’s a reasonable chance he won’t be playing again for Liverpool this season.
Over in the Netherlands there’s even been worry about Euro 2020, which is set to be held next summer after Covid-19 ruled it out this year. Losing the defender for the tournament would be a huge blow for Oranje and also a cruel scenario for Van Dijk himself.
Georginio Wijnaldum faces being without his teammate at both club and national level, and the midfielder is inevitably being asked about the injury situation whenever he speaks to the Dutch media.
Voetbal International have managed to get a few words with the Liverpool player at the start of the current international break, and he remains concerned about Van Dijk but is keeping in touch with his compatriot.
VI quote Wijnaldum as saying: “Virgil will return with God’s will. It is a difficult time for him, this is the worst thing you can experience as a footballer. He is going through hell. But I think he is very strong. We FaceTime every now and then and that is very pleasant.”
Asked if he’s been given a message from Liverpool for the current international break, Wijnaldum said yes: Come back fit.
