There hadn’t really been a great deal of haste regarding the Netherlands appointing their next manager. That Dick Advocaat stepped down last week was no surprise, with it being expected a new man would come in either towards the end of this year or at the beginning of 2018.

Everything has been relatively chilled out. Ronald Koeman has probably been the main candidate, although Frank de Boer has also received his fair share of mentions. So the plan has been to take everything calmly and appoint Advocaat’s successor in good time, but in no rush.

Things may have just changed. Ronald Koeman is one of a handful of managers being linked with the West Brom job, now that Tony Pulis has been given the nudge.

That’s quickly made its way to the Netherlands, where several media outlets are reporting worry that West Brom could take the Koeman option away. Voetbal Primeur and Voetbal Zone both talk about competition for the Oranje, but, crucially, they both base that on English reports.

When Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, who have very good Koeman connections, report West Brom as a possibility, that’ll probably be the time to start thinking there could be something in it.

Now West Brom fans will see the period in which bookmakers do their best to talk up a series of potential managers, and therefore spread their liabilities over several options.
