Toby Alderweireld leaving Tottenham Hotspur’s match against West Bromwich Albion on a stretcher was a big blow to the club. Alderweireld has easily been one of the best central defenders in the Premier League over the past year, and much of Tottenham’s success under Mauricio Pochettino is built on having a solid base at the back.
It’s not only Tottenham who are worried about a potential lay-off. The lack of any real update from Spurs has led to worry in Belgium that Alderweireld won’t be back for the next international break.
Belgium play the Netherlands on November 9th in a friendly, and then face Estonia on November 13th in a World Cup qualifier. In recent years under Marc Wilmots, the Tottenham defender was the most used player for Belgium, and Roberto Martinez would surely like to carry on such a trend.
Belgium’s Voetbal Primeur and several others in the country report that Martinez will be fretting about the situation, especially with Belgium having other issues with central defenders.
