Last year, we covered the big expectation there was in Mexico regarding which national team Arsenal youngster Marcelo Flores would choose to play for.
The midfielder made his debut for the Tri’s first team in December, featuring in a friendly for a few minutes.
Now it turns out Flores hasn’t returned to their squad since then. And even though he doesn’t play for Arsenal’s first team either, there are those in Mexico who believe he should still fight for a place at the World Cup later this year.
Speaking about that, Mexican legend Hugo Sanchez came forward to say he’s not so sure about the idea.
“It’s very complex, to be experimenting with a player who is to some extent a doubt,” Hugo Sanchez told ESPN.
“The World Cups are not for experimenting, we’ll have to be patient with him.”
Marcelo Flores joined Arsenal’s academy in a move from Ipswich Town back in 2019. Following his promotions through the Gunners’ youth ranks, he’s been playing this season in the U-18 Premier League and Premier League 2.
Now as he waits for his debut under Mikel Arteta, it seems he could even have some hope of making it to a World Cup this year as well, but probably not if Hugo Sanchez is listened to.
