Bild have quite a strange story on Liverpool and Yann Sommer, which seems to be speculation repackaged as something else, almost a sales effort for Borussia Monchengladbach.
The German newspaper say Sommer had a ‘world class… terrific’ performance for Switzerland against Brazil at the World Cup, and that will have attracted interest in England.
They then say ‘Makes Klopp serious this time? Sommer plays in the World Cup for Liverpool!’ with the latter part appearing to mean absolutely nothing at this stage.
It’s claimed rumours of Liverpool interest have been around for three years, but never before has there been a time more fitting for a big offer.
Sommer’s good game combined with Loris Karius’ Champions League nightmare is very much the basis for this story from Bild, and yet they’ve gone to the trouble of contacting Gladbach’s sporting manager Max Eberl.
He explained: “At Gladbach, no player is unsellable. Who knows what sums of money the Englishmen will bring when one of our players trumps in Russia?”
Bild say an offer of over €30m for Sommer would be seriously considered by the Bundesliga club.
Is this all a sales effort on behalf of Gladbach to try and take advantage of World Cup fever? It’s either that or speculation pushed to the extreme.
