If we take a look at Colombia’s national team squad, we’ll see plenty of well known footballers who, unfortunately, couldn’t meet the expectations put on them.
So it was quite surprising for some when after convincing Liverpool to make a heavy investment in his signing in the middle of the season, Luis Diaz quickly went about pushing his hype even higher.
The 25-year-old ended up becoming a sensation in his home country, and now he’s said to be a degree higher than other national team stars such as James Rodriguez and Falcao Garcia.
On Antena 2 show Palabras Maiores, journalist Carlos Antonio Velez pointed out how important Luis Diaz is for Colombia these days.
“Luis Diaz is the only world class that we have, the others, it is pure cart, pure smoke. They’re very dear,” said Velez (via Futbolete).
This hasn’t gone down well with everyone, especially fans of some of Colombia’s other perceived stars.
In the first part of the season with Porto, Diaz had 16 goals and six assists in 28 appearances. Now following the move to Liverpool, for which the Reds spent €45m, he’s easing through his adaptation to English football and winning more fans by the week.
