Cenk Tosun has returned to action, sort of, for Everton in recent weeks. After a long period out injured, the striker was on the bench for the recent matches against Wolves and Tottenham.
Rafael Benitez didn’t choose to let the Turkey international have any minutes, but it’s a clear sign the player is fit and available as the January transfer window appears on the horizon.
Tosun has repeatedly been linked with a move to Turkey, since not long after he arrived from Besiktas, and it’s again his former club who are looking at a deal. Given the 30-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the current season, it’s very unlikely Besiktas would want to pay anything for the player, so attention turns to his wages.
At more than one point it’s been suggested Tosun would be quite happy to manage his fitness, and pick up his wages, with Everton until he’s a free agent next summer.
However, it’s become increasingly clear that Besiktas want him sooner.
Fanatik report ‘work will be started’ to sign the player, but it’s still not clear what the plan is in regards to his wages. It doesn’t take a huge leap of faith to believe Besiktas will want a free deal, and also for Everton to subsidise Tosun’s wages until the end of his contract should the player refuse a pay-cut.
Everton won’t be keen on that, so it’s time for Marcel Brands to get negotiating.
