Shoya Nakajima has five goals and five assists in 12 Liga NOS matches so far this season. The Portimonense player has been receiving interest from several clubs, with rumours building for weeks.
Claims of a transfer to Wolves being imminent appeared just over a week ago, and then the Portuguese club’s president said the transfer to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side was 80% of the way there.
That president, Rodiney Sampaio, got impatient surprisingly quickly, and a week after his 80% comments, added: “I said last week that there was a 20 percent gap to close the transfer of Nakajima to Wolverhampton and since then no step has been taken.”
Sampaio is trying, perhaps somewhat haphazardly, to push the price from €20m closer to the player’s €40m buyout clause, and there’s been claims of interest from other clubs.
A Bola report this weekend that Wolves are the ‘closest’ to making the signing, but also reference unnamed competition.
It’s explained the Japan international may have made a goodbye appearance for Portimonense on Friday, contributing an assist in a 3-1 victory over Vitoria Setubal.
That was the club’s last home game before the window opens.
