While the rumours surrounding the future of Rui Patricio at Wolverhampton Wanderers have calmed down a bit, they haven’t entirely gone away.
The Portuguese goalkeeper was immediately described as a target for José Mourinho at AS Roma, with neither Pau Lopez nor Robin Olsen deemed as good enough for the role, and a lot of that had to do with Jorge Mendes.
The agent represents both the manager and Patricio, and there were stories that he could accommodate a move for the veteran shot stopper in the summer.
Things have since changed, according to Corriere dello Sport, with it explained that Mike Maignan, recently called up by Didier Deschamps to backup Hugo Lloris in this summer’s Euros, is now Mourinho’s priority in Rome.
Patricio, however, is the ‘main alternative’, as the 33-year-old ‘can be acquired at a comfortable price’ thanks to his age and the fact the goalkeeper’s contract at Molineux runs out next year.
We’ll have to wait and see, but it appears to be Maignan first and then the Wolves man, at least for the time being.
